On Monday, police officers together with personnel from the Public Prosecutor's Office executed search warrants at two properties in the department of Santa Cruz, as part of an investigation into the discovery of automatic rifles inside luggage at Viru Viru international airport.
The operations were carried out at a residential building in the Equipetrol sector, to the west of the Santa Cruz city centre, and at a house in the Urubó area, within the municipality of Porongo. The intention was to find evidence leading to those responsible for the arms smuggling.
Daniel Ortuño, the prosecutor in charge of the case, indicated that several apartments—more than half a dozen—were inspected in the Equipetrol residential complex. From there, documentation and footage from surveillance camera systems were removed. The same procedure was repeated at the Urubó property.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office representative, the goal was to apprehend a man who already has an active arrest warrant. At the same time, they sought to obtain evidence that would be examined to locate those who remain in hiding.
The seizure of the rifles took place the previous Thursday, when two women attempted to take the suitcase in question. They were initially detained, but a judge ordered their release. It is known that a third person involved escaped the operation and has not yet been located.
Ortuño stressed that the investigation covers several suspects. To date, at least four names are linked to the seizure of the high-powered weapons. One of the raided properties is registered as belonging to the fugitive in official records.
