A National Customs employee was removed from his position and criminally charged after it was discovered that he favoured transport companies run by his direct relatives. The case came to light this Tuesday and involves the Arica External Agency.
The institution identified the former official as Nelson Rivera Michel. According to the official report, this man had allegedly committed crimes of corruption and document falsification whilst exercising functions at the aforementioned border office.
The investigations revealed that the dismissed employee had family ties with two people who legally represented firms engaged in cargo transport. These were his spouse and his brother-in-law, who appeared as the owners of those companies.
Thanks to this network of preferential treatment, the family businesses received favourable treatment to transport merchandise, whilst the rest of the logistics operators faced disadvantages. The practice distorted fair competition at the transit port and eroded the integrity of the state body.
Given the seriousness of the findings, the Customs authorities decided on the immediate removal of the individual involved and filed a complaint with the authorities responsible for prosecuting these offences.
