At Viru Viru airport terminal, located in the city of Santa Cruz, uniformed officers found a suitcase concealing pistols inside. The operation took place in the international flight zone, where agents opened a bag that had been left stranded for several days.

Inside the luggage they discovered approximately half a dozen firearms, which had been disassembled to facilitate concealment. Police officials are analysing the seized cargo as part of an investigation into possible smuggling of weapons material.

To date, two individuals linked to the incident have been brought before the authorities. Investigators are also working to identify and locate another suspected perpetrator who would be part of the network.

The travellers arrived in the Cruz region on 5 July, but the suitcase was not opened immediately. Only on the current day was it inspected, when the illicit contents came to light. The seized items were transferred to police facilities for expert examination.
