Bolivia's law enforcement continues investigations into Eduardo Valdivia, the former top official of the state-owned company Boliviana de Aviación (BoA). The man is suspected of having engaged in unlawful conduct including extortion of officials, improper use of his position and obtaining personal benefits derived from his office, according to statements made by police official Cheryl Sempertegui to Erbol, a sister outlet of eju.tv.
The prosecution opened the case on its own initiative. At the current stage of proceedings, only one individual has given testimony to the authorities. That person is parliamentarian Claudia Mallón, a member of the political group APB-Súmate, who publicly made a complaint that Valdivia paid a sum far below the usual tariff for a return ticket from the United States city of Miami to Bolivian territory.
The congresswoman stated that the former executive paid 933 bolivianos for the air route, when the normal market cost would be above 5,000 bolivianos. The accused justified the fact by arguing that airline employees receive discounts on ticket fares.
Colonel Sempertegui clarified that there has not yet been a date set for the prosecution to call the defendant to give a statement. "We do not yet have that information; we are awaiting instructions from the prosecuting body regarding when the defendant will be summoned," she said.
Valdivia took over at the head of BoA on 15 April and was removed from his functions on 8 June. As yet, prosecutors have not determined when they will receive the statement of the former official.
