Investigation launched into former BoA executive for alleged extortion and misuse of influence
The law enforcement authorities are proceeding with investigations into the former top executive of the state airline Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), Eduardo Valdivia. Official Cheryl Sempertegui reported that alleged violations are being examined, including illegal demands for money, inappropriate exploitation of his rank, and obtaining profits derived from his office.
So far, only one witness has appeared before the authorities in the process that the Public Prosecutor's Office initiated ex officio. This is congresswoman Claudia Mallón, a member of the parliamentary group APB-Súmate, who made public an irregularity: according to her account, Valdivia paid a sum well below the standard tariff for a return ticket from Miami to Bolivian territory.
The legislator stated that the amount disbursed by the former official was 933 bolivianos, whilst the current value at the ticket office would be around 5,000 bolivianos. Valdivia himself justified this payment by arguing that airline personnel enjoy reduced fares.
The executive in question was appointed to head BoA on 15 April and was removed from the position on 8 June. Sempertegui clarified that the defendant's summons to give a statement has not yet been scheduled, as this remains subject to what the accusing body determines.
