Two women arrested following the discovery of AK-47 rifles at Santa Cruz airport appeared at their hearing. Their defence lawyer argues they did not know what they were transporting and that they will reveal who sent the shipment.

Relatives of the two women detained in the so-called weapons case at Viru Viru airport spoke out on Tuesday to express their support as the accused entered their statement hearing. Both had been arrested the previous week alongside a young man, following an inspection that revealed heavy weaponry hidden in their luggage.
Karla Robledo, the lawyer representing the two accused, assured that they were completely unaware of the contents of the bags they were carrying. The defence lawyer indicated that her clients would not remain silent and would provide information about those who had asked them to transport the shipment.
According to the lawyer's account, the detained women work for a company that offers purchasing and shipping services for products from the United States, operating as personal shoppers for third parties.
The Special Force Against Crime opened proceedings for alleged weapons smuggling after agents detected four AK-47 assault rifles, 7.62 mm calibre, inside luggage coming from United States territory. The intervention took place at the facilities of the international airport terminal in Santa Cruz.
For his part, the Interior Minister, Marco Antonio Oviedo, reported that there is a third suspect implicated in the case, a United States citizen, who has not yet been located by authorities.
