The authorities in San Lucas, a locality in south-eastern Bolivia, proceeded this Friday to arrest a 56-year-old man linked to the trade union movement. He is accused of causing the death of a 37-year-old woman—mother of three minors—by means of a hit-and-run, and then disposing of her body by throwing it into the waters of the Pilcomayo river. The judicial investigation is proceeding under the classification of femicide.
The man came into police custody when attempting to leave the locality. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted his responsibility in the events. The evidence gathered thus far indicates that the detainee transported the body to the structure of Chaulla Khocha bridge, from where he threw it into the river channel. He is also said to have disabled the mobile phone of the deceased in order to hinder investigations.
The arrestee's statement is viewed by prosecutors as a highly significant piece of evidence, although it will need to be cross-checked with forensic reports and other technical elements that may emerge from the judicial inquiry, with the aim of faithfully reconstructing the sequence of events in the crime.
The victim's body was extracted from the river on the previous Thursday. The precise motives behind the attack have not yet been established, nor whether there was any prior relationship between the two individuals. The hypothesis being pursued by the Public Ministry is that of a femicide.
If confirmed, this would be the third episode of lethal violence against women recorded in the department of Chuquisaca during the current year. Across the entirety of Bolivian territory, the record of cases with this classification stands at 45.
