Military police officers detained four minors on Tuesday (7) in Lapa, a neighbourhood in the western zone of São Paulo. They are suspects in at least two crimes against motorists stopped in traffic congestion. The group was taken to the 7th Police District and apprehended for infractions equivalent to robbery from motor vehicles and criminal gang formation.

The tactic used by the offenders is known as "window-breaking": taking advantage of slow traffic at red lights, they approach vehicles running, destroy the side windscreens with car ignition parts and remove mobile phones before fleeing on foot in the opposite direction.

According to specialists consulted by Gazeta do Povo, the challenge for authorities is not the lack of arrests — which happen routinely — but rather the difficulty in reaching those who acquire, unlock and sell the stolen devices. Leaders of criminal organisations employ young people on the front lines, aware that if caught, they are typically released in a short time.

An emblematic example occurred in the Liberdade neighbourhood, where more than a year ago victims marked a property on mapping applications as a point for receiving stolen devices. As legal expert William Pimentel explained, constitutional protection of the home prevents police intervention without a court order based on more solid evidence than GPS tracking.

The SSP-SP announced that mobile phone robberies in the capital fell by 16% in the first five months of this year compared to 2025. The department also mentioned Operation Contrafeixe, carried out in June by the Deic, which executed 19 judicial search warrants against suspects of this type of crime.
