Detained after assaulting partner who refused to finance drug purchase

A 29-year-old man was arrested in flagrante delicto on the morning of Thursday, 3 September, in Presidente Prudente, inland São Paulo, after assaulting his 44-year-old partner with punches and slaps, threatening to kill her, and pursuing her to her mother's house. According to g1.globo.com, the motive was the woman's refusal to hand over money — and her mobile phone — so that her partner could buy drugs.

According to the police report released by the Civil Police, the argument began when the man asked for money and the mobile device with the intention of selling them to acquire cocaine. During the altercation, the victim was struck with a punch to the head and slaps to the face.

Flight with daughter and death threats

Faced with the escalation of violence, the woman removed her daughter from the location and took refuge at her mother's house. Her partner followed her. The victim reported to the authorities that, during the events, the man made explicit death threats, saying he would kill her "with a knife". He also reportedly broke various objects inside the residence and attempted to reach her, without success.

The assault occurred in the presence of a child who, according to the account, was sleeping, woke up with the commotion and began crying and calling for help.

History of violence over ten years

The victim told police that she has maintained a relationship with the suspect for nearly ten years and that during that period there have been several separations motivated by physical assaults. She also stated that her partner frequently uses cocaine and that she had previously tried, without success, to persuade him to stop consuming it.

The officers located the man in the residential courtyard. At that point, he admitted he had slapped his partner, but presented a version of events different from that reported by the victim.

Denial at the Flagrante Crimes Unit

Brought to the Flagrante Crimes Unit, the suspect changed his initial version and denied having assaulted or threatened his partner. He claimed that there had only been an argument and that there was no evidence of the threats being attributed to him. He also denied having used any object or committed physical violence.

Arrest determined based on risk to victim

The duty delegate determined the arrest in flagrante delicto of the man for crimes framed within the context of domestic and family violence against women. The authority considered the reports of the victim and the officers who attended to the incident, having identified a risk to the woman's physical and psychological integrity, in addition to the history of violence described by her.

The victim expressed interest in the granting of emergency protective measures.
