A 30-year-old man was arrested on Sunday (12) in the city of Presidente Prudente, located in the west of São Paulo state, for carrying a firearm without authorisation and for being in possession of narcotics. The arrest occurred shortly after he had been released under special conditional liberty, having served less than three years of a sentence for killing another person in 2023.

The police operation began when the force received information that the suspect had displayed a revolver at a public party in the Jardim Humberto Salvador neighbourhood. A patrol car was sent to the area and managed to locate him.

When questioned by officers, the man initially denied the suspicions. Later, however, he admitted that he kept a revolver and ammunition in his house, located in Parque José Rotta, claiming that he needed to protect himself.

Upon searching the residence, the officers discovered inside a built-in cabinet in the kitchen a .38 calibre weapon whose identification markings had been removed, along with nineteen rounds. A quantity of cannabis was also seized, hidden inside a glass jar that was in the freezer.

The prisoner told investigators that he had purchased the weapon from a truck driver approximately thirty days after recovering his liberty. He explained that he kept himself armed because he feared retaliation linked to the crime he committed two years ago. As for the illicit substance, he said it was intended solely for his personal use.

According to the occurrence report, the detainee left the prison system on 16 March this year. He was serving time for the homicide that occurred on 28 October 2023, also in the Jardim Humberto Salvador neighbourhood, when he fired at a victim and was apprehended in flagrante delicto. According to the 8º Baep, there remain eight years of imprisonment to be served for that conviction.

The police authority emphasised that the offender was caught with a weapon of prohibited use — as it was devoid of serial numbering — less than four months after obtaining supervised liberty. In view of the reoffence, officers requested from the Judiciary the conversion of the flagrante arrest into preventive custody, arguing that such action is indispensable for preserving collective safety.
