A 37-year-old man was arrested on Thursday (9) after forcibly entering his former partner's home and subjecting the woman and three children of the ex-couple to a hostage situation.

On the evening of last Thursday (9), a 37-year-old man was arrested in São José do Rio Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, after breaking into his former partner's residence and subjecting the woman and three children of the ex-couple to a hostage situation. The incident occurred in the Jardim Vida Nova neighbourhood.
According to reports from state police, the individual could not accept the breakup. He approached the house saying that he intended to talk. The eldest daughter, an 18-year-old woman, successfully managed to alert the police force. Before the patrol car arrived, the man left the property, but returned shortly afterwards and broke down the door.
Wielding a dagger, he subjected four people — his ex-wife and the dependants aged 18, 13 and 6 — to a situation of coercion for approximately thirty minutes. Following dialogue with officers, he agreed to surrender and was taken into custody.
None of the people involved sustained physical injuries. The arrested man was taken to the jail of the Specialised Division of Criminal Investigations (Deic). The Women's Defence Police Station (DDM) is conducting the investigation under charges of domestic kidnapping, intimidation and verbal assault.
Investigators are also verifying that the detainee uses narcotics and has a history of family violence against his own sister.
