Penal Police carried out an inspection at a prison unit in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (4) and collected 26 mobile phones and a significant quantity of drugs, according to g1.globo.com.
The operation is part of Operation Illicitus, conducted by the State Secretariat of Penal Police (Seppen), which has increased the pace of inspections in prison units since August. In total, the operation has already resulted in the seizure of more than 600 mobile phones in the state.
Among the material collected on Friday are 230 packets of white powder, seven containers of the same substance, 88 packets of resinous mass, 20 containers of resinous mass and 440 packets of chopped dry herb. The exact nature and quantity of the substances are still awaiting expert confirmation.
The inspections are carried out by the Operational and Intelligence subsecretariats and by the General Ombudsman's Office of Penal Police. The targets include prisoners, visitors and penal police officers who may be involved in the introduction or circulation of illicit materials within the units.
Seppen states that since the beginning of the operation in August, hundreds of mobile phones and more than eight kilograms of drugs have been seized in prisons across the state. The stated objective is to interrupt communication between detainees and members of criminal organisations at large, weakening the operation of organised crime from within Rio de Janeiro's prison system.
