On Wednesday, Brazil's federal police executed a search warrant at the home of 71-year-old former president Jair Bolsonaro. The operation aimed to confirm whether the politician had complied with the court order that required him to surrender all weapons in his possession.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court, who also decided that Bolsonaro could serve his sentence in home detention, authorised the search. The intention was to ensure that the former head of state had obeyed the earlier determination.
According to a source close to Bolsonaro, the inspection was not surprising and was brief. The police officers allegedly found no weapons, ammunition or other relevant items. "The defence has already informed the authorities about the location of all weapons. Result: nothing was found," Bolsonaro's lawyer João Henrique de Freitas subsequently commented.
However, the lawyer's statement contradicts the earlier assertion by Justice Moraes. He had stated that, despite the surrender of several weapons to federal and local police, at least one of the weapons registered in Bolsonaro's name had still not been located.
Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup d'état. The court allowed him to serve the sentence in home detention, despite an incident last month when police seized a weapon belonging to Bolsonaro with a member of his security team.
