Officers demand Gonet's removal from case linked to Supreme Court scandal

Brazilian Federal Police officers requested on Saturday that chief prosecutor Paulo Gonet step aside from the investigation into a police report in which he himself is mentioned, according to Correio da Manhã.

The case is linked to the scandal that triggered a crisis at the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Gonet ordered an investigation to determine whether there were external interference in the preparation of this police report. The document contains messages collected from the mobile telephone of Daniel Vorcaro, former owner of the defunct Banco Master, arrested as part of an investigation into massive fraud in the financial system.

The report revealed an extensive list of contacts between Vorcaro and senior authorities in the country. Among the names identified is Federal Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over the trial that resulted in the imprisonment of former president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted of attempting a coup d'état.
