On Thursday morning (9), an operation by ROTA in the Heliópolis neighbourhood, south zone of the São Paulo capital, resulted in the death of two individuals. Police officers from the 1st Shock Battalion were on patrol in the area when they attempted to conduct a stop.
According to the Public Security Secretariat, the men allegedly resisted, leading the officers to fire shots. Both were taken to a health unit, but did not survive. One of the deceased, 37 years old, had an arrest warrant issued for robbery, theft, corruption of minors and drug trafficking. He was also being investigated for involvement in the attempted murder of First Lieutenant Ronickson Pimentel dos Santos, 39 years old, who was shot in the head on 27 June when he stopped at a traffic light in São Caetano do Sul.
The SSP did not establish a connection between the second man and the attack. During the operation, 2.6 kilograms of cannabis and portions of crack cocaine were seized. Forensics attended the scene and the weapons used were sent for analysis. The report was filed at the 26th Police District (Sacomã) as a death by police intervention, seizure of objects and drug trafficking, and the DHPP will conduct the investigations.
This incident brings to six the total number of deaths in ROTA operations linked to the crime against Lieutenant Pimentel. The officer, older brother of Eloá Pimentel — an adolescent murdered in October 2008 in Santo André — remains hospitalised in a serious but stable condition, under sedation, mechanical ventilation and after tracheostomy.
The Civil Police are working with the hypothesis that the attack was premeditated, with a division of roles among those involved. To date, two people have been detained for involvement in the crime. Hércules da Costa Siqueira, nicknamed Golias and considered the person who fired the shots, remains at large. The state government is offering a reward of R$ 50,000 to anyone who provides information about his whereabouts, and he has been included on Interpol's red list.
