Death of Dylan: minor stabbed in Santiago in a fight between teenagers
A 14-year-old teenager identified as Dylan died on Wednesday after being beaten and stabbed during a fight in the Gabriel González Videla neighbourhood, in the Santiago district, according to adnradio.cl.
The attack occurred near 15:00 hours at the intersection of Conferencia Street and Tucapel, a few blocks from Escuela República de Haití, where the victim was studying. According to initial information, Dylan was apparently surrounded by several people; witnesses report up to four individuals involved, at least one of whom was carrying a sharp weapon.
Despite the injuries sustained, the teenager managed to reach near his home to seek help. His family transported him to Hospital Exequiel González Cortés, in San Miguel, where his death was confirmed hours later.
A neighbour in the area stated that the incident originated in a fight between minors and pointed to another young person of the same age as the victim. "It was a problem, a fight between children, but the boy who caused Dylan's death did it in cold blood. He wanted to kill him. He said he wanted to kill him," she said. The same woman stated that "the victim and the perpetrator are both fourteen years old," although that account will need to be corroborated by the ongoing investigation.
So far, no arrests have been reported. The PDI Homicide Unit is working to establish the dynamics of the attack and identify all those involved.
On Thursday morning, Escuela República de Haití brought forward the end of the school day and parents began collecting their children. White balloons were placed at the location and there was an atmosphere of deep shock among teachers, students and families after learning of Dylan's death.
The minor's grandmother, Claudia Fernández, described the pain it meant for the family to lose the eldest of four siblings. "It is such great pain to see my daughter fade away like this. They took her eldest son, aged 14, imagine," she said. "We don't understand why, why him. My daughter is alone with four children," she added.
Dylan's body remains at the Legal Medical Service while the family completes the corresponding procedures and the PDI continues with proceedings to determine responsibilities in the homicide.
