The PDI's Missing Persons Search Brigade detained a 17-year-old teenager as the alleged perpetrator of the homicide of Benjamín Galdámez, according to biobiochile.cl. The victim, aged 19, had gone missing on Tuesday, 20 October in the municipality of Maipú, Metropolitan Region. The detainee has confessed and will face a second detention hearing.
Galdámez's family members reported his disappearance under unusual circumstances in the Casas del Espejo sector, on the street of the same name with the south riverside road, next to the Zanjón de la Aguada and near Route 78. Faced with lack of information, the family requested assistance from media outlets, the PDI and Carabineros.
According to findings from the investigation, Galdámez was at a friend's house with whom he had an informal watch resale business. Upon leaving the location—within the same residential area—and whilst waiting for a mobile application vehicle, he was approached by the 17-year-old teenager.
The detainee is an individual known in the area precisely for robbing residents of the sector. According to inquiries, he allegedly took Galdámez and brought him to a vacant plot of land adjacent to the Zanjón de la Aguada, where he carried out the robbery. That is the last point for which there is certainty or suspicion regarding the young man's whereabouts.
According to the statement of the accused, after injuring the victim, he threw the body into the canal. What is still under investigation is whether the injury was caused by a blade or firearm.
The search for the body has been seriously hampered by the increased flow of the Zanjón de la Aguada, due to rainfall in recent days. The family held a wake in the sector and continues attempting to locate the body in the surroundings of Casas del Espejo and the south riverside road.
