Bolivian sentenced to 10 years in Chile following seizure of 2.8 tonnes of drugs
A Bolivian citizen received a 10-year prison sentence in Chile for transporting more than 2.8 tonnes of drugs valued at 15 million dollars.

Chilean courts sentenced a Bolivian citizen to 10 years in prison after being found in possession of more than 2.8 tonnes of narcotics, according to reduno.com.bo. The cargo was valued at approximately 15 million dollars.
The events occurred in March 2025, when police officers intercepted the man at kilometre 1091 of Route 5 North, in the commune of Taltal. Agents detected that the vehicle was travelling with its lights off, a manoeuvre that was interpreted as an attempt to evade checkpoints.
Upon inspecting the cargo compartment, officers found several sacks containing 94 packages with different types of drugs. Subsequent analysis determined that the cargo included 6 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride, 26 kilograms and 760 grams of cocaine base, and 2,837 kilograms and 961 grams of cannabis.
During the trial, the chief prosecutor of Alto Hospicio, Guillermo Arriaza, presented statements and expert reports prepared by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Brigade and Organised Crime Unit (Brianco). Also entered as evidence was an analysis of the mobile phone seized from the accused, in which conversations linked to the drug supplier were found.
Based on these findings, the court established the responsibility of the Bolivian citizen for the offence of illicit trafficking in narcotics and psychotropic substances, and imposed the 10-year prison sentence.
The case renews scrutiny over the routes used to transport large volumes of drugs from Bolivia into Chilean territory, as well as over the police operations deployed to intercept this type of trafficking.
