Truck driver attacks military personnel in Arica border zone and is detained

A Bolivian citizen was detained in the Arica and Parinacota Region for his alleged responsibility in an attempted murder against personnel of the Chilean Army, according to cnnchile.com.

The incident occurred around 06:40 hours at kilometre 30 of Route A-155, a border sector in the region. Military personnel detected a convoy of five trucks and initiated an inspection and tracking procedure.

One of the drivers allegedly attempted to evade the checkpoint by directing the truck directly at the military personnel. Following the incident, the man was detained and handed over to Carabineros.

The accused maintained regular migration status in Chile and carried a driver's licence issued in Bolivia.

The incident is part of a series of joint operations by Carabineros and military personnel in border sectors of Arica and Parinacota. During the procedures, various offences related to vehicle smuggling and other traffic violations were detected.

The Regional Secretary for Public Security, Pedro Álvarez, praised the work of the institutions involved. "When we talk about seven detainees in less than seven hours, the truth is that it is great work by the institution, which demonstrates the technical capacity, will and professionalism of the institutions," he stated.

The driver was placed at the disposal of the courts whilst the prosecution establishes the circumstances of the procedure and his potential responsibility in the crime under investigation.
