Seven intoxicated in cargo sector of Santiago airport
A staff member at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez airport was detained after distributing cannabis gummies among his work colleagues, according to latercera.com. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the cargo sector of the airport facility and left seven workers experiencing intoxication symptoms.
Minutes after consuming the gummies, the affected individuals began experiencing vomiting and dizziness, prompting staff to alert their supervisors. The seven workers were transferred to the ACHS Workers' Hospital; six received medical attention and were discharged the same day.
One worker remains in serious condition at Hospital Félix Bulnes
Western Regional On-Flagrante Prosecutor Paz Escobar confirmed that the gummies contained "high THC content", which "caused health problems in these individuals". Regarding the condition of those affected, she noted that one of the workers "remains hospitalised in serious condition at Hospital Félix Bulnes".
Major Priscila Aguilar, commissioner of the 27th Airport Police Station, reported that the staff member who distributed the gummies was detained by Carabineros. At the time of detention, a bag containing four gummies and a chocolate bar was seized.
Investigation seeks to determine origin and composition of product
The Carabineros OS7 assumed responsibility for investigating the case. Captain Belén Galáz, of the Anti-Drug Department, stated that the gummies and chocolate seized were sent to the Public Health Institute for expert analysis. The objective is to determine "whether these gummies only contained THC or may also have contained some other type of substance, perhaps in a smaller quantity".
Galáz did not rule out the presence of other substances, given the intensity of the effects recorded in the workers. Additionally, she noted that police teams are seeking to establish where the accused obtained the product and whether additional units were sold. "It is extremely important to continue with the investigative process," she emphasised.
The captain also clarified that "it is not the first time that gummies or cakes with THC have been seized", but indicated that they had never previously faced a situation with people intoxicated to this extent.
Prosecutor Escobar reported that the accused will appear at a detention control hearing in the morning block today.
