Finance Minister Cooper demands prosecution investigation into alleged account in Czech Republic
Finance Minister Charles Cooper has requested that the prosecution service initiate a criminal investigation into an alleged bank account of Curaçao in the Czech Republic. This is reported by NU.cw (Dutch Caribbean) on the basis of reporting in the Antilliaans Dagblad.
According to Cooper, the account was opened without the knowledge of the government, the ministers and his own Finance Ministry. The account may have been used for payments from the online gambling sector, including cryptocurrency payments.
The matter comes against the background of an ongoing conflict within coalition party MFK between Cooper and former minister Javier Silvania over reforms in the online gaming sector and the role of the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA). Cooper did not name Silvania, but stated that someone who has nothing to hide need not fear an investigation.
The Antilliaans Dagblad says it has seen documents pointing to an account with Czech payment provider Payment Execution s.r.o., in the name of 'Government of Curaçao'. The newspaper emphasises that the authenticity of those documents has not yet been confirmed.
