Confession to hammer murder in Limassol – body found in sewage pit

The 43-year-old defendant accused of the murder of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva appeared before the District Court of Limassol without a lawyer on Sunday, 1 November, for the issuance of a detention order. According to Philenews, the suspect has already made a confession.

The investigator from the Limassol TAE, Stelios Andreou, told the court that on the same day a search was conducted at the suspect's residence, during which several pieces of evidence were found and seized for scientific analysis.

The 43-year-old stated voluntarily that he wished to give evidence and admitted that he killed the victim with a hammer. He claimed that they were in his house when the woman assaulted him, causing him to become enraged, seize a hammer and strike her.

Particularly shocking is what followed in his account. The suspect kept the body at his residence for one night. The next day he loaded it into his vehicle and drove it to a rural area of the village of Saitas, in the Limassol district, where he threw it into a sewage pit. He said he threw the hammer into a wooden pergola at his house.

Following the confession, the 43-year-old himself pointed out to investigators the exact location where the body was disposed of. Members of EMAK were called to the scene and recovered the body from the pit. A forensic examination that followed established that the body was at an early stage of decomposition and bore multiple injuries to the head.

The District Court of Limassol approved the police request and issued a detention order for the suspect for eight days to facilitate the investigation.

The case presents a broad investigative scope. According to what was presented to the court, it is estimated that approximately 80 statements will need to be taken from individuals from the family and social environment of both the defendant and the 61-year-old, as well as from other persons who may possess useful information.

At the same time, the authorities are planning the examination of extensive material from closed-circuit surveillance systems, focusing on the movements of the 43-year-old and the 61-year-old, as well as the wider area where the body was discovered. It is also expected that requests will be submitted to the court for access to telecommunications data, recorded private communications, as well as banking details and accounts of both persons involved.
