911 corruption allegations reported to Authority – 71% examined, investigatory powers expected in October

911 allegations of corruption in Cyprus – Pogiatjis presents Authority's report
The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority has received a total of 911 allegations, of which 645 – representing 71 per cent – have already been examined. These figures were released by the Authority's President, Charis Pogiatjis, according to Politis.
Mr Pogiatjis spoke on Tuesday at the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia, during a discussion on the rule of law and institutional independence. He noted that the figure of 911 corresponds to allegations submitted up to 31 August 2026, originating from both institutions and citizens. He also observed that the Authority has identified "ignorance" regarding corruption.
Investigatory powers in October
Regarding the granting of investigatory powers to the Authority, Pogiatjis stated that recommendations from the Ministry of Justice have been received and that the relevant discussion is expected to begin within October 2026.
However, regarding the granting of prosecution powers, the Authority's President was cautious. "There is reluctance on the part of the authorities to proceed to this stage," he stated, adding that constitutional amendment would be required for this purpose.
Action plan with 11 measures
Mr Pogiatjis also noted that the Authority has drawn up an action plan comprising 11 measures, which has begun to be implemented gradually.
As part of ensuring the integrity of persons exercising senior executive duties, the Authority plans to provide each new official with a booklet containing all legislation concerning corruption. The booklet will be accompanied by information about the risks arising from non-compliance with the relevant provisions. This initiative is expected to be implemented in approximately one year, according to Pogiatjis.
