Three years' imprisonment for former anaesthetist following abuse of sedated patients

Hanover Regional Court has sentenced a former anaesthetist to three years in prison, according to DER SPIEGEL (Justice & Crime). The court found the 52-year-old guilty of child sexual abuse and possession of child sexual abuse material. The sentence is not yet final.

According to the court, the man had photographed sedated patients over a period of years at Regionsklinikum Neustadt am Rübenberge near Hanover. The victims were almost exclusively girls, the youngest being eight years old. In one case, he also carried out sexual acts against a patient. The proceedings also covered recordings from his private environment as well as files on his mobile telephone.

The public prosecutor's office had called for six years' imprisonment and a professional ban; the defence pleaded for two years' probation. The accused had already admitted the central allegations during the trial. Before the verdict was announced, he apologised to the victims, saying: "There is nothing more I can do."
