Following a late-night bomb threat to a 24-hour flea market in Constance, police gave an all-clear on Sunday midday. The harbour site, where the weekend event was taking place, was completely reopened after several hours.
At around 2.00 am on early Sunday morning, officers at Constance police headquarters received an anonymous telephone call. An unknown caller had warned in several conversations of multiple explosive devices on the flea market site.
Police officers subsequently searched the site with specially trained explosives detection dogs. When examining a suspicious bag, the bomb disposal unit of the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office was called in. The experts were ultimately able to rule out any danger.
Due to the cross-border nature of the market, not only areas in the German city of Constance but also adjoining zones in the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen had to be evacuated. Constance railway station was also within the cordoned-off area, and train traffic between the two countries was temporarily halted.
Shortly after 12.15 pm, officers finally lifted all cordons. The flea market was able to resume operations. Police investigations are ongoing.
