In the night into Monday, one or more previously unknown perpetrators entered the grounds of a substation in Reutlingen in south-west Germany and set fires at several locations. This act resulted in approximately twenty thousand households being temporarily without power supply. The material damage is estimated at several million euros.
According to a joint statement by the police and state prosecutor's office of Baden-Württemberg, investigators are assuming arson. The case receives heightened priority because an extremist or terrorist motive cannot be ruled out. For this reason, the department for constitutional security and counter-terrorism is leading the investigation.
The news agency DPA already reported on Monday that the method of execution points to a possible act by left-wing extremists. Journalists recalled the recent large-scale attacks on the distribution network in Berlin. Last September, unknown persons damaged two electricity pylons, leaving approximately fifty thousand apartments and two thousand businesses without power for around sixty hours. Another incident at a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal in January left forty five thousand households and more than two thousand businesses in darkness; restoring the supply took almost one hundred hours.
Reutlingen, a university city approximately forty kilometres south of Stuttgart, has over one hundred seventeen thousand inhabitants.
