Following a reported burst pipe at a vacant multi-family building in Mönchengladbach, police discovered a professionally operated cannabis plantation during the night into Monday, as reported by zeit.de. A resident had called emergency services after a foul-smelling liquid seeped from the building.
Firefighters at the scene did not find a burst sewage pipe, but rather approximately 1,000 cannabis plants. According to police, ventilation and irrigation systems had been dangerously connected to the electrical network.
Due to the hazardous wiring, the entire street had to be temporarily disconnected from the power supply. The plantation was subsequently dismantled and the plants were destroyed.
Investigations into possible suspects are ongoing. The operator or operators face criminal proceedings for unauthorised cultivation of cannabis in excess of the legally permitted amount.
