Cyber attack on Bavarian supermarket: refrigeration system heated to 50 degrees

Cyber attack destroys food stocks

According to augsburger-allgemeine.de, cybercriminals attacked the refrigeration systems in a supermarket in Reisbach (Dingolfing-Landau district) and heated them to approximately 50 degrees. The operator subsequently had to dispose of large quantities of spoiled goods, which he communicated via the business's Facebook page. The majority of refrigerated items could not be saved; only food sharing volunteers were able to collect usable products in a short time.

The Lower Bavarian Police Headquarters is investigating the case. A spokesman announced that they would coordinate with authorities in other countries, as similar cyber attacks on supermarkets have already taken place in France, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Luxembourg, Estonia, Finland and the Netherlands.

The supermarket operator announced plans to restock the shelves with fresh goods on Tuesday. The police initially did not release further investigation details.
