Conviction following rape on car bonnet in Düsseldorf old town
Düsseldorf Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced two men to five years' imprisonment each for gang rape. According to BILD, Saad A. (34) and Ahmed A. (41) — both Syrian nationals — were brought to court in February. A third perpetrator remains at large.
According to the prosecution, the crime occurred during the night of 29 June 2025 at Stiftsplatz in Düsseldorf's old town. At approximately 2.45 a.m., the men lifted a then 27-year-old woman onto the bonnet of a parked car. The woman had previously consumed alcohol and had temporarily lost sight of her friends. According to the charges, she was scarcely able to react due to the alcohol — which the perpetrators must have realised at the latest at that point.
The three men raped the woman in succession. According to the prosecution, two of them kept watch each time to keep witnesses away. Nevertheless, the act was noticed: two men who happened to be passing by became aware of what was happening. Ahmed A. reportedly told them that he knew the victim. According to witnesses, he simultaneously mocked the woman — in effect saying: "She needs this."
When the witnesses became suspicious, Ahmed A. is said to have run towards them screaming and shouted that he would also assault them. The men were not intimidated by this and intervened — whereupon the perpetrators fled. The witnesses called the emergency number and brought the victim to a police car on nearby Burgplatz.
That same night, police arrested Ahmed A. and Saad A. provisionally. DNA traces on the woman's body were treated as evidence. The third person involved managed to escape unidentified and has not been apprehended to this day.
At the start of proceedings, Saad A. had stated that he was ashamed to be represented by a woman interpreter. On Tuesday, a judge delivered the verdict.
