Following the severe disturbances at the second division match of 1. FC Magdeburg at the end of January, police intend to post photographs of alleged rioters online and display them on posters. The public is to help with identification.
Since the incident, a special task force with over 20 officers has been working at full capacity. So far, five people have been reported to the football club. Four of them are banned from entering the stadium. A fifth stadium ban procedure is imminent.
However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. According to police spokesman Stefan Brodtrück, there are concrete grounds for suspicion against more than one hundred people. Two of them are under investigation for attempted manslaughter. The others are suspected of serious breach of the peace – an offence that can be punished with imprisonment of between six months and ten years.
Investigators have a vast amount of data to sift through: 27.5 terabytes of footage from various cameras. Each suspect must be linked to a specific criminal act. This is why the work is progressing slowly.
The club is working closely with the authorities. Chief executive Martin Geisthardt assured that every new case would immediately result in a stadium ban procedure. In addition, security measures are being tightened: protective barriers in the away section are being raised, the security concept is being revised and a new fan liaison officer is being hired.
The processing will continue for a long time. Over the coming weeks, further names are to be passed to the club and judicial authorities.
