Tampered sweets on Halloween night: police investigating in two states

In Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate, children found dangerous foreign objects in their sweets after Halloween trick-or-treating, as web.de reports. Police have opened investigations in both cases.

In Wintzingerode in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia, children noticed metal needles in several sweets when unpacking their collected candies. The Nordhausen state police inspectorate stated that the needles appeared to have been deliberately inserted into the products to cause injury. The investigation is being conducted on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm. According to police, which house doors the tampered sweets were distributed from remains unclear.

In Appenheim in Rhineland-Palatinate, a nine-year-old boy discovered two small magnets, each approximately two millimetres in diameter, attached to a chewing sweet. The boy had checked his haul after his mother became aware of possible tampering on Instagram. Ingelheim police confirmed the discovery on Sunday. No one was injured.

Both police departments called on parents to carefully inspect collected sweets before consumption. Similar incidents had occurred in previous years: in Kiel, a mother found razor blades among her children's Halloween sweets.
