Car attack on group of people — suspect in custody
Police near Hanover have arrested a suspect following a deliberate car attack on a group of people. The public prosecutor's office and police announced that the man will be brought before an investigating judge shortly.
According to the investigation, the suspect is accused of attempted murder in five cases. There is suspicion that he deliberately hit multiple people with his vehicle. The suspect's age and nationality were not initially disclosed.
According to WELT, late on Monday evening in Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony, a driver deliberately steered his vehicle into a small group of people and injured at least five people, some of them seriously. Police officers who were conducting a traffic control in the immediate vicinity fired shots at the vehicle in order to stop the attack. The driver subsequently fled.
According to the current state of the investigation, the perpetrator and victims knew each other and, according to police, belonged to extended families. Police Chief Gwendolin von der Osten stated: "Based on our current findings, the act was deliberately directed against specific individuals and not against uninvolved persons." The authorities are appealing for witnesses and people with video recordings to come forward.
The police corrected an earlier statement from the previous day. A report about three temporarily detained persons was incorrect. The error was due to an internal communication failure. In fact, it involved a general person check as part of search operations.
