According to tagesschau.de, police shot a 59-year-old man in Erkrath-Hochdahl on Tuesday morning. At around 10 o'clock, a member of staff from a nursery on Sandheider Straße reported that a man with a knife was in the immediate vicinity of two nurseries.
When officers arrived, the man ran towards them with the knife in his hand. A shot was then fired, hitting the man in the abdomen and seriously injuring him. Emergency services first treated him at the scene before he was taken to a hospital.
According to the authorities, neither bystanders nor police officers were injured. Police have not ruled out a direct connection with the neighbouring nurseries so far.
Press spokeswoman Diane Dulischewski confirmed that nursery staff had witnessed the incident. "We cannot currently rule out that children may also have witnessed the incident," Dulischewski said. Police chaplains are on site providing support.
The background to the incident remains unclear at present and is the subject of ongoing investigations. Düsseldorf police took over the further investigation for reasons of impartiality.
