Unconstitutional symbols have appeared in the northern Harz region on Tuesday. Officers from the local police station discovered several far-right symbols on a covered wooden bench in Weber Street in Ermsleben around midday.
Unknown perpetrators had burnt four swastikas into the wood of the bench. In addition, another banned emblem of an extremist group was displayed, which had been applied with a black felt-tip pen. The responsible local authority was instructed to remove the graffiti.
Shortly after, in the early afternoon of the same day, an employee of Deutsche Bahn made a similar discovery at Ilsenburg railway station. Another swastika and a slogan, likewise applied with black pen, were found on a platform wall in Karl-Marx Street.
In the Federal Republic, the swastika is regarded as a symbol of a banned organisation. Its use is generally prohibited under the criminal code. Law enforcement officers have therefore opened criminal investigations in both cases.
