During the night leading into Tuesday, an incident in Bremen's Bahnhofsvorstadt district triggered a police operation, as butenunbinnen.de reports. A confrontation had occurred between two groups on Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße; according to witness statements, one of those involved fired twice into the air – allegedly with a blank-firing weapon.
When police officers arrived, four people were still present at the scene. They are said to have previously argued with two further people. According to police, one of those involved was armed with a wooden bat that appeared to have blood on it.
Officers secured two cartridge cases as evidence as well as the wooden bat. The firearm itself has not been found to date. A Chechen man with Russian citizenship is regarded as a suspect.
According to preliminary investigations, there had already been a dispute between members of the two groups the evening before. Police assume that the incident is not connected to a shooting spree from March, in which there were five firearm attacks in various parts of Bremen. In mid-March, one person was shot in Huckelriede; three suspects are now in custody.
Investigations into the background of the current incident are ongoing. Police are asking witnesses who observed activity on Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße to come forward.
