A 42-year-old Swiss man was arrested in Weil am Rhein at the German-Swiss border after a routine check revealed that an arrest warrant had been issued against him for unpaid fines.

A 42-year-old man from Switzerland was arrested on Monday evening in the Baden-Württemberg town of Weil am Rhein by officers from the federal police. The incident occurred only a few hundred metres from the border with Switzerland, as Blick reports.
The Swiss man had initially approached the police officers and asked for directions to his home country. Before the officers provided information, they checked his details as part of a routine control. In doing so, they discovered that an arrest warrant from German authorities had been issued against the man.
According to police, the 42-year-old had been convicted by a German court in the previous year for aggravated theft and sentenced to a fine of 1,800 euros. The case concerned the theft of a perfume. The act was classified as "serious robbery" because the man had been in possession of a craft knife at the time of the offence.
Under German law, mere possession of a weapon or dangerous object during a theft can already lead to higher criminal liability – even if the object was not used.
Since the convicted man had neither paid the imposed fine nor been able to produce it during the border check, the officers immediately took him into custody. He was subsequently transferred to a correctional facility, where he must serve a prison sentence of several weeks.
The town of Weil am Rhein is located directly on the border between Germany and Switzerland and is an important border crossing in the three-country corner of Germany, France and Switzerland.
