Homicide suspect dies in confrontation with police in Verón

The National Police reported on Sunday that Carlos Daniel Alcequiez Rodríguez, alias "Carlos El Menol", aged 25, died following an alleged exchange of gunfire with officers at the Costa Mar residential complex in Verón, Punta Cana, according to elnacional.com.do.

Alcequiez was wanted under an arrest warrant for the death of Anderson Santos Rodríguez, alias "Vaguito", aged 23, whose body was found buried in Nagua.

According to the institution's preliminary report, officers conducting investigative work at the site were attacked with gunfire and returned fire. Alcequiez was wounded and died subsequently at Verón Municipal Hospital.

The police report does not specify how many officers participated in the operation, whether any were injured, at what time the incident occurred, or how long it took before the wounded man received medical attention. It also does not indicate whether the Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into the death, who owned the weapon, or how many shots the officers fired.

The Police reported that they seized a Glock pistol calibre 9 millimetre with magazine and five cartridges, and that they collected three shell casings from the scene.

The crime that motivated the search

Santos Rodríguez died on 21 October. Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident may have originated in a dispute over RD$200 related to the sale of controlled substances. His body was found in Nagua, in a hole approximately 1.5 metres deep, wrapped in a mamey-coloured tarpaulin.

Another man, Brayan Cius, is being held for his alleged involvement in the case.

Context: second death in recent operations

This case is added to that of Manuel Isidro Almonte, alias "El Pudri", who died on Thursday 22 October during an operation by the Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM) in the Capotillo sector.

Days earlier, former prosecutor Francisco Domínguez Brito had reported an increase in alleged extrajudicial executions by law enforcement officers. The police report released on Sunday makes no reference to these allegations.

The National Police indicated that it would continue investigations in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office and within the framework of existing law. At present, the institutional account is the only version available regarding what occurred in Verón.
