In the case of Isa Khalilov, in which three people died on Laagna Road in Tallinn, the police submitted to the court for the first time an expert assessment based on a vehicle's GPS log. Previously, officials have used such recordings to detect traffic violations for a long time, but court proceedings require an assessment from the Estonian Forensic Science Institute.
The Police and Border Guard Board has no overview of how many times similar expert assessments have featured in proceedings. This tragedy was, however, the first case in which navigation device data reached court as official evidence.
Leana Loide, press representative of the Police and Border Guard Board, explained that the proceedings were based not only on satellite positioning data but also on recordings from the vehicle's dashboard camera.
