Fraudster stole €700 from pensioner using gift cards in South Savonia
A South Savonian pensioner fell victim to fraud in early June and lost €700. According to Eastern Finland Police, the victim received an email message on 11 June that was sent under the name of a familiar member of his pensioner organisation.
In the message, the victim was asked to purchase seven gift cards for the Paysafe system. The sender explained that the cards would be distributed to active members of the organisation as thanks for their work contribution. The victim agreed to the request and obtained the cards at his own expense.
The pensioner photographed the codes on the back of the gift cards and sent the images to the fraudster. After this, the money disappeared.
Between May and June, Eastern Finland Police received reports of 311 fraud or payment card fraud cases. Of these, 164 were scams carried out online.
