The death of a middle-aged man during anaesthesia in a magnetic resonance imaging scan at a Pihlajalinnan facility in Kuopio led to a police investigation, which is now complete.

The man died during an imaging procedure at a private health centre in the North Savo city in January 2023. Police have concluded the preliminary investigation and suspect the doctor who provided treatment of a crime.
The victim had a shoulder complaint, which was why he attended the clinic. Due to claustrophobia, he was put to sleep before the examination. After the scan was complete, staff noticed that the patient showed no signs of life. He was still managed to be woken up, but ultimately he was found to have suffered total loss of brain function. He was then disconnected from the ventilator.
According to investigating authorities, the patient was not given sufficient oxygen during anaesthesia. He was also not monitored with appropriate equipment. It transpired that similar anaesthetics were not intended to be performed in this unit at all.
The man's brother told the media last year that his relative had been put to sleep without clear reason and no one was present to monitor him. According to the health company, the anaesthetist responsible for the matter is no longer its employee. The company has changed its operating procedures and discontinued similar examinations entirely.
The deceased left behind a minor child.
