Former Polaricare CEO sentenced to prison for human trafficking
Lapland District Court has delivered its verdict in what is described as Finland's largest human trafficking trial. The former CEO of berry company Polaricare has been sentenced to prison for human trafficking, according to Yle.
More than two years have passed since the former CEO and his business partner were charged. According to prosecutors, Thai berry pickers were forced to work in different parts of Finland in 2022.
The former CEO commented on the matter in a statement when charges were filed, calling the investigation "a great shock" in light of the long-term work developing berry picking operations.
Now the court has delivered its decision. Both the former CEO and business partner, who have denied the crimes, have been sentenced in 78 human trafficking cases. The former CEO receives a sentence of two years and six months in prison, while the business partner is sentenced to nine months in prison.
The men, together with the berry company, must pay 500,000 euros in compensation to the victims for suffering and financial loss. The company must also pay a penalty of 150,000 euros.
