The trial over a fire that occurred in Kerimäki on Independence Day continues today in the South Savo District Court. The young man faces charges of four counts of homicide and arson.
According to the prosecution, the 23-year-old set fire to his own home, in which his partner and three underage children died. The man denies the charges entirely.
The court session continues with witness testimony. The prosecutor and defence counsel will make their closing statements later in today's court session.
Earlier in court, it emerged that the defendant has been convicted of a violent crime against the victim. He also had financial difficulties. According to lawyer Kari Eriksson, the man sought to control his partner's life.
– These are the kind of typical building blocks that precede a final act, Eriksson stated on Thursday.
According to investigators, the fire started from petrol that was poured on the floor. The exits were set alight, preventing escape. The victims died from smoke poisoning in the parents' bedroom. The house was destroyed in an explosive manner.
According to the defendant's account, his partner woke him to inform him of the fire. The man claims he fled and broke windows to save the others. According to him, this led to an explosive spread of the fire.
The man has offered several explanations. Initially, he suggested an electrical fault. Later, he accused his partner's father and even the victim herself of causing the events.
The prosecutor and the representative of the relatives have questioned all the explanations not supported by other evidence.
