Second arrest following Limoges town hall fire

According to bfmtv.com, a second suspect has been arrested with the help of the Raid in the investigation opened following the fire at Limoges town hall. The suspect, aged 66, was detained this morning in Creuse and placed in police custody for "destruction by an organised group of property using means dangerous to persons".

The fire broke out on Saturday 17 October during demonstrations against "the cost of living" which escalated into riots in several French cities. The roof and belfry of the building, inaugurated in 1883, collapsed. Only the modern section at the rear was saved by firefighters; the oldest structure was "almost 100% destroyed" inside.

On Tuesday, a first suspect aged 34 had been arrested in Val-d'Issoire, in Haute-Vienne. Listed as a person of interest for his links to the far left and known for acts of violence against representatives of authority, he was initially prosecuted for "destruction by an organised group using means dangerous to persons" and "death threats".

Two days after his arrest, the Limoges public prosecutor's office reconsidered the criminal charges brought against this first suspect. An "attempted murder of a person holding public authority" was added to the accusations, according to a statement from the public prosecutor of Limoges published on Thursday.
