Marseille: investigation into attack on police riot control van and fire at city hall
Nicolas Bessone, prosecutor of the Republic in Marseille, clarified to BFM TV that the violence that occurred during the mobilisation of 17 October is the subject of an ongoing investigation. A police riot control van was attacked and the city's town hall experienced a fire during these events.
According to the prosecutor, no arrests have been recorded so far. The authorities are concentrating their efforts on identifying the direct perpetrators and any potential masterminds of the violent acts. "We want to trace the masterminds," Bessone indicated, emphasising the scale of the investigation being conducted by the Republic's services.
The investigation is pursuing several lines of enquiry: establishing individual responsibilities in the attack on the van and the fire, but also identifying potential chains of command behind these acts. The prosecutor stressed that this phase of the investigation is delicate and that the results of the initial investigations will inform any potential prosecutions.
Police and gendarmerie services remain mobilised to gather evidence and witness statements. The violence observed during the demonstration of 17 October in Marseille had prompted considerable concern from local and national authorities.
