Violence of 17 October: investigations against law enforcement
Ten investigations have been opened and entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) following the day of demonstrations on 17 October, according to the Paris prosecutor's office questioned by BFM TV on 22 October.
One investigation in particular concerns a street medic who is alleged to have been a victim of violence by law enforcement officers near Place de la République in Paris. This man had positioned himself in front of a line of riot police, arms spread wide, shouting "medic". A video capturing the scene circulated widely on Instagram, TikTok and X.
"I told myself that a medic positioning himself to prevent further escalation of violence, that was symbolic," he explained to the AFP, acknowledging that "it didn't work". An investigation for violence by a person in public authority was opened on 21 October by the fundamental freedoms protection section of the Paris prosecutor's office.
Before 17 October, 36 investigations relating to acts involving police officers had already been opened and entrusted to the IGPN since the beginning of the secondary school student movement.
