New details about the perpetrator of the fatal attack in Trap, a suburb of Paris, on Friday evening have been revealed by the newspaper Le Monde, according to In.gr. The 39-year-old who was arrested told police he wanted to kill as many Arabs as possible and congratulated himself because he had "taken revenge" for the incidents from the previous week.
For 20 minutes he fired from his car at anyone who did not appear to be white, killing a 26-year-old and wounding five others. Among the wounded is a 12-year-old girl, who is being treated in critical condition.
During a search of his home in Plaisir, in the Yvelines district where the attack took place, authorities discovered a copy of Hitler's "Mein Kampf". Investigators are examining his electronic devices to determine whether he acted alone or was part of far-right networks.
The search of the flat required the intervention of a specialised police unit: the 39-year-old had booby-trapped his residence using three gas canisters and electrical cables connected to a timer.
In his vehicle, in addition to the weapon used in the attack, tear gas was found, gloves and a substance suggestive of cocaine, which was sent for laboratory analysis.
Residents of Trap who spoke to Le Monde said that the racist rhetoric targeting refugees, migrants and French citizens of African descent had prepared the ground for such an attack. "We knew that sooner or later something like this would happen," some of them said.
The French prosecutor's office announced that it has opened an investigation for murder and attempted murder within the framework of a terrorist act, based on the actual or presumed belonging of the victim to a particular race, ethnicity, nation or religion.
