Knife attack on Mandras police station: attempted murder charges
The 31-year-old who burst into Mandras police station on Friday, 4 September 2026, wielding a knife, faces charges of attempted murder among other offences, according to Newsit.gr. The man is currently hospitalised in intensive care, whilst the police officer who shot him was released following a verbal order from the prosecutor.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon. The 31-year-old entered the station threatening police officers, whilst civilians waiting for identity document issuance were also present in the premises. He smashed glass panels and used the fragments to threaten others whilst shouting, injuring one police officer. When he refused to comply with orders, a probationary police officer shot him in the abdomen. The ambulance service transported him to Asclepeion hospital, where he is being treated in intensive care.
A case file was also opened against the police officer who opened fire, for violation of weapons legislation. However, the prosecutor released him on a verbal order.
Investigation revealed that the 31-year-old suffers from psychological problems and intended through the attack to retaliate against the authorities for an earlier arrest related to domestic violence. His history is extensive:
- 2015: Arrested following a domestic violence incident in Acharnes, after threatening his partner and her mother with a knife; this was followed by involuntary psychiatric evaluation.
- April 2025: Attempted suicide, resulting in his involuntary admission to Dromokaitio hospital.
- October 2025: Arrested for insulting behaviour and threatening a neighbour with an air rifle.
Following the earlier arrest for domestic violence, he had also been hospitalised in a psychiatric institution.
