A magistrates' court has adjourned until Monday the trial of a 68-year-old woman and her son, who are accused of unlawfully concealing a dead body, according to Newsbeast. The two defendants are alleged to have buried the body of the woman's elderly mother in a storage facility of the family home in Marathon, and both are currently in custody.
The remains were discovered on Friday morning in a basement space of the residence on Ithaki Street, following a report made by the deceased's granddaughter. The granddaughter reportedly informed the authorities that she had had no contact with her grandmother for a decade.
The 68-year-old is alleged to have confessed that she concealed her mother's death in order to continue receiving her pension. Her son, for his part, denies any involvement in the case.
The investigation is ongoing. A specialist anthropologist has undertaken the examination of the remains, with the aim of determining the age of the deceased and, by extension, the time of her death. The results are expected to allow for the attribution of a temporally specified fraud charge against the State. If the total amount of the fraud exceeds €120,000, the offence may be prosecuted as a felony.
