A telephone scam targeting a 74-year-old woman has been solved in Kilkis. An accomplice of the perpetrator impersonated a notary public and persuaded the elderly woman to gather money and jewellery for an alleged inventory count.

A 74-year-old elderly woman in a village in Kilkis fell victim to a criminal gang operating telephone fraud schemes. The incident occurred on 26 May.
According to the Hellenic Police, a man contacted the victim by telephone and impersonated a notary public. In a convincing manner, he persuaded her to gather all the cash sums and jewellery she had at home, claiming it was necessary to count them.
The 74-year-old fell into the trap and handed over €5,300 in cash, 32 English gold sovereigns and various items of jewellery. The valuable items were collected by another man, who fled in a vehicle belonging to one of his relatives.
Police officers from the Kilkis Crime Division managed to identify a 27-year-old suspect and filed charges against him. At the same time, they are investigating the identity of the remaining members of the gang and examining whether they are involved in similar cases.
The case will be referred to the prosecutor. Authorities warn citizens not to trust strangers who call them by telephone and request personal information or valuable items.
