Fraud posing as accountants in Karpathos: Two arrests
Four young men, aged 19 to 23, were identified as members of a group that defrauded residents in Karpathos. Local authorities made two arrests and identified two other individuals.
According to information released, the group operated in a coordinated manner from the evening of 18 June. One member impersonated an accountancy office employee and telephoned citizens. He convinced them that they would be included in a state subsidy programme, on condition that they avoid taxation.
In two cases, they managed to obtain money and jewellery. In one of these, the victim went to a bank to withdraw cash and then handed over the money and jewellery to an accomplice.
The rapid response by authorities led to the arrest of the 23-year-old as she was boarding a ship for Piraeus. Part of the stolen valuables were found in her bag. Authorities located the remaining stolen goods in a rented accommodation. The following day, the 19-year-old was arrested when he went there to retrieve the items.
Overall, five fraud incidents that occurred over the last two days were clarified. The stolen goods were returned to their owners. The two arrested individuals were taken to the Court of First Instance Prosecutor's Office in Rhodes.
